Vietnam rewards the traveler who slows down—and travels well. This handcrafted luxury Vietnam itinerary takes you from the lantern-lit lanes of Hanoi to the emerald waters of Halong Bay and the imperial calm of Hoi An, all with private guides, five-star stays, and the kind of access most visitors never see. Here is exactly how to spend ten unforgettable days.

IN THIS GUIDE

Best Time to Visit Vietnam

Vietnam stretches more than 1,000 miles north to south, so there is no single “best” season—it depends on where you go. For the classic north-to-central route in this itinerary, the sweet spots are March to April and October to November, when skies are clear, humidity drops, and Halong Bay is at its most photogenic.

If you are traveling from the US, factor in a flight of roughly 18–22 hours and a 11–12 hour time difference. We build in a gentle first day so you can recover from jet lag before the itinerary begins in earnest.

INSIDER TIP

Avoid the week of Tet (Lunar New Year). It’s culturally fascinating but many family-run restaurants and ateliers close, and domestic travel books out months ahead.

The 10-Day Itinerary, Day by Day

Days 1–3 · Hanoi

Settle into the colonial grandeur of the Old Quarter. Your private guide leads a dawn walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, a street-food tasting that goes well beyond pho, and an after-hours visit to the Temple of Literature. We pair the city with a hands-on session with a third-generation silk artisan—an experience arranged exclusively for our travelers.

Days 4–5 · Halong Bay

Trade the city for the water aboard a private overnight junk. Expect kayaking through hidden lagoons, a sunrise tai chi session on deck, and dinner served as the karsts turn gold. This is the centerpiece of any luxury Vietnam itinerary, and worth every minute.

Days 6–8 · Hoi An

A short flight south brings you to Hoi An, a UNESCO-listed trading port frozen in amber. Cycle through rice paddies at golden hour, commission a bespoke garment from a master tailor, and dine at a riverside table lit by a thousand silk lanterns.

What Travelers Should Know Before You Go

A few practical notes that matter to Australia/ New Zealand/ America visitors: most passport holders need an e-visa (apply online ~1 week ahead); tipping is appreciated but not obligatory; the currency is the Vietnamese dong, though USD is widely accepted at luxury properties; and tap water is not potable—your guide will keep you supplied with bottled water throughout.

Good to Know

Pack light, breathable layers and a good pair of walking shoes. Evenings in the north can be cool in spring and fall, so bring one warm layer.

How Much a Luxury Vietnam Trip Costs

As a guide, a fully private, ten-day luxury Vietnam itinerary like this one typically starts around $4,500–$9,000 per person, based on double occupancy and excluding international flights. The figure scales with hotel category, private versus shared transfers, and special experiences. Every trip we design is tailored to your taste and pace—no two are alike.
